Food for People Ghana Receives Best Institution Award

Food for People Ghana Receives Best Institution Award

Each year in Ghana, the first Friday of December is National Farmers’ and Fishermen’s Day. It is a public holiday celebrated on district, regional, and national levels, where the best farmers and fishermen are given awards. The theme for the 2014 holiday was, “Grow what you eat and eat what you grow.”
Food for People (FFP) in Otinibi, Ghana fit the bill perfectly. Since May of   2012, FFP Ghana has been serving a hot nutritious lunch to an average of 400 school children every day. Meals have been provided for the ailing elderly as well, both at the facility and by delivery to their homes. Before long, attendance at school increased and students’ grades began to improve. Older people suffering from malnutrition began to gain better health.
Soon it became obvious that growing as much of the food used for these meals as possible onsite would have many benefits, such as providing work for locals and guaranteeing a steady supply of fresh organic vegetables at a good price. After a vegetable farm was established in 2013 on two acres of land donated for that purpose, a chicken farm was also developed. Before long, the Food for People farm was providing all the eggs, chicken, and vegetables for the meals served and it was no longer necessary to purchase food from an outside market. Among the crops grown are carrots, lettuce, cabbage, tomatoes, onions, okra, chili peppers and green peppers.
On the 20th of November 2014, officers from the Municipal Assembly of the La Nkwantanang District came to the Otinibi facility to inspect the farm. As a result, FFP Ghana was nominated for the Best Institution Award along with other institutions such as schools and hospitals, and was invited to display some of their produce at the local Farmers’ Day celebration on December 5, 2014.
With some quick and efficient work from the staff, FFP crops, chickens, and eggs were displayed at the fair-like celebration. At the end of the day, Food for People was selected for the award in recognition of its fulfillment of the “Grow what you eat and eat what you grow” motto. The food kitchen, known locally as “the canteen,” was publicly acknowledged for its outstanding contribution toward the development of agriculture in Ghana.

Prem Rawat Gives First Address of 2015 in Oxnard, CA

On March 15, 2015 Prem Rawat addressed a capacity crowd of about 1,400 people at the Oxnard Performing Arts Center in Southern California, his first speaking event of the year.
The seaside city of Oxnard lies 60 miles northwest of Los Angeles, and the region has several community groups participating in The Prem Rawat Foundation’s Peace Education Program (PEP). The program’s workshops feature video footage of Prem’s international speeches about personal peace and inner resources, but the Oxnard event marked the first opportunity for many local participants to see him deliver a live address.
Sharing her thoughts just outside the theater soon after seeing Prem speak for the first time, PEP participant Adriana Almontes said she was struck by how “the energy just kept growing and growing in there. I’m still vibrating from it,” she said. Her central takeaway from the address was “to be comfortable within your own skin. When you love yourself within, then the rest transforms,” she said.
Prem told attendees that he doesn’t consider himself an “inspirational speaker.” Instead, he encouraged listeners to harness their own innate inner resources “because there’s no one responsible for your life other than you,” he said. “The day you become your own inspirational speaker, that’s the day you begin thriving.”
That was a message that resonated with Sharon Eichner, another local PEP participant. “What I got out of what he said today is that we need to look inside and be our own inspiration. I think that’s true. It’s important,” she said. “If you anchor yourself in those things he spoke about–self-compassion, self-acceptance, self-love–the things that happen in everyday life, the difficulties in life, can’t break you down as much.”
As he explored the theme of personal peace, Prem urged attendees to look inward to find a sense of happiness that isn’t dependent on “our appointments and responsibilities.”
“We get lost in all those things that we do,” he added. “That’s not happiness. … Happiness is when your heart dances with you, when your heart is alive. That is the state of happiness that is supreme. … Socrates was not wrong when he said, ‘know thyself.’
For Angela Ayala, the speech was a good reminder that “life is a miracle–that every day you are alive is a miracle.” Angela is in the midst of taking the 10-week PEP course a second time “because I enjoyed it so much that I wanted to go back and continue, and maybe see if there were messages and information that I missed the first time.”
Meanwhile, Sharon’s son, Andrew, accompanied her to the event, curious to check it out after watching a few videos at home of Prem speaking. He also shared some thoughts just outside the theater under the warm California sunshine.
“I think the message ‘know yourself; look inward’ is especially good for young people. It’s difficult when you have a bunch of different directions you’re being pulled in. So to know yourself, it’ll help you decide which path and direction you want to take,” he said. “I feel like our younger generation has a general cynicism about the world as it is today. So I think having a different outlook, an appreciative outlook on things, on life itself, is helpful.”

Perfect Meditation

All we have to do
is slow down, and let this meditation take place.
It's like waves lapping upon the shore
every breath followed by another.
We must be right inside for every wave
not back at the last one, or pushing the next one,
but gently, slowly, and lovingly,
feeling the soft strength that is life.
When we do this, hour upon hour,
we can come to each other like children.
If we follow the path of the Name
this love will be there inside constantly.
But we must slow down and let the softness move us.
It is through the door of the present moment
that God enters into your life.
And it is through you
that he enters into the life of the world.
Perfect meditation creates love,
Perfect love sanctifies union,
Perfect union is the goal.
Meditation is the only medium
through which you can increase your love.
And love will spring forth,
will make you one.
And finally, everything will be organized.
